AIS Introduces XESS 5.0
Most Powerful Spreadsheet for Linux, UNIX, VMS, and Windows NT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- October 26, 2000 --

Applied Information Systems (AIS) announced today that it has released version 5.0 of the XESS spreadsheet products for Linux, UNIX, VMS, and Windows NT systems. These products include the XESS spreadsheet, the xsBasic Macro Option, and the XESS Software Developers Kit (SDK).

XESS 5.0 provides a redesigned user interface, a high level of inter-operability with other products, expanded support for the Web, and many new tools and functions for data analysis and manipulation while maintaining its long-standing reputation for performance, efficiency, compatibility, and reliability.

The xsBasic 5.0 Macro Option includes new objects and methods for accessing the features of XESS 5.0. The xsBasic language is an object-oriented version of BASIC with objects designed specifically for use as the macro facility for the XESS Spreadsheet.

The XESS SDK includes new API functions and data structures allowing external applications to be fully integrated with XESS, seamlessly sharing data and control.

XESS 5.0 is the most powerful spreadsheet product over the widest range of systems and environments, from small desktop systems to large enterprise servers, supporting 3-D workbooks with up to 10 million rows. New features in version 5.0 include:

"Our goal is to provide the best spreadsheet products with the most features and the best performance across the largest number of platforms, backed by high-quality documentation and support," said Arthur Coston, president of AIS. "XESS 5.0 meets this goal without the bloat associated with many other products. Almost all versions of the XESS executable are still well under 5MB, including all options and features."

The XESS products are supported on the widest variety of servers and workstations, with applications freely interacting across platforms. For example, an XESS add-in (e.g. the Xess/Trade extension for real-time financial market data) can seamlessly provide real-time market data from a UNIX server to a mixture of workstations using Linux, UNIX, VMS, and Windows NT.

XESS 5.0 is available worldwide from AIS and its partners for:
